A clean, fresh interior not only enhances appeal but also signals that your home is well-maintained. Investing in professional carpet cleaning and stone or tile floor cleaning can be the game-changer that seals the deal.

The Importance of Clean Floors

Floors are among the first features buyers notice when entering a home. Stained carpets or grimy grout can give the impression that the house hasn’t been properly cared for. On the other hand, spotless carpets and gleaming tile floors create a welcoming atmosphere, making buyers feel confident in the quality of the home.

Odor Elimination: Deep cleaning removes lingering smells from pets, food, or spills, ensuring a fresh-smelling home.

Pre-Inspection Advantage: Clean floors help during home inspections, as they reflect well on the overall condition of the property.

Why Professional Cleaning Is Essential

While DIY cleaning methods can help, they often fall short of the deep, transformative results professionals provide. At Clean Pro Carpet and Restoration, our technicians use advanced equipment and safe cleaning solutions to restore your carpets, stone, and tile floors to like-new condition. Our services include:

You may have noticed it in your own home, or the home of a neighbor or friend – dark, dirty-looking lines in the carpet around the baseboards, under doors and on stairs. What is it?
Can it be removed? Will it come back? These are some of the most frequently asked questions when our technicians go into a customer’s home.

The dark greyish or black discolorations that occur around the perimeter of rooms and in the doorways of some houses can be a source of embarrassment and frustration. Our customers rely on us not only to clean their carpets, but also to educate them about how to maintain their carpet. Before we explain what these mysterious dark lines are, we’ll talk about what they are not. Contrary to what you may think, it has absolutely nothing to do with accumulated dust from poor housekeeping. It is not a defect in carpet. And, although some believe it to be mold, it is not!
Even pest control companies have been wrongly accused of causing these unsightly lines with their treatments. So, what IS it? These black lines are called filtration soiling.

Although it can happen in any home, filtration soiling is most common in homes that have forced air HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. At certain locations in the carpet, air is being forced through the fibers by pressure and temperature differentials. The carpet fibers act as a filter, trapping pollutants that are in the air. Some of these pollutants are the product of combustion and contain carbon. Common sources are automobile exhaust, industrial air pollution, tobacco smoke, and even natural gas or oil furnaces. This carbon, combined with oily residues from cooking and other sources, adheres to the carpet with very powerful electrostatic and chemical bonds.

The particles themselves are extremely small and very difficult to remove. The best course of action is prevention. Here are a few tips to prevent gray edges appearing on your carpet:

• Make sure that any means of combustion in your home including gas or oil heating systems, cooking appliances and water heaters are operating properly. Incomplete combustion caused
by improperly functioning appliances contains higher levels of carbon. This can cause rapid soiling.

• Have heat exchangers, flues and chimneys checked by an HVAC professional for leaks or improper function.

• If you like to burn candles, limit how often you use the heavily scented ones. The oils used in these candles do not burn completely adding to the pollutants in the air, accelerating filtration soiling.

• Install high quality air filters in your heating and air system. This may require modifications to the system. Check with a qualified HVAC contractor.

• Consider using air purifiers, especially if smokers are present in the home. Tobacco smoke produces among the most difficult residues to remove.

• When using a fireplace or wood stove, ensure that there is adequate fresh air entry so as to create enough of an updraft for the fireplace. Otherwise some of the smoke may get into the air and contribute to soil filtration. You may need to open a window a little. Don’t turn on ceiling fans in areas where you have a fireplace burning. Air currents may pull smoke into the living space.

Clean Pro Cleaning & Restoration uses specialized cleaning agents and techniques to treat soil filtration lines. Although complete removal of the discoloration may not be possible, we can usually improve the appearance. Of course, prevention is always your best line of defense.

Protect– Provide for the safety of workers and occupants
Inspect– Locate and document damage
Mitigate– Minimize or control damage; dry structure and contents
Monitor– Keep daily records of drying conditions and progress
Restore– Clean and repair structure and contents

While each of these steps requires special equipment, the machines used in mitigation are the most visible to you, the customer. This article explains why we need them and how they work.
The first principle of drying is to remove excess water. In most cases, we use a powerful vacuum extractor to quickly remove water from carpet and other floors since this is where most of the water ends up. This can be a noisy process, but the more water we remove in the beginning, the less time it takes to dry everything else.

After extraction, we coax water out of wet materials and into the air through the process of evaporation. One of the challenges we face is that air at the wet surface becomes saturated; unable to hold any more water vapor. This slows the drying process significantly. Air movement is needed to replace moisture-laden air at the surface with drier air. We use high-velocity air movers to increase airflow and promote evaporation.

The water vapor produced by evaporation moves into the surrounding air, increasing humidity. Air is like a sponge. If the sponge is dry, it will absorb water. But if the sponge is wet, it will release water into dry materials like drywall and wood. Left unchecked, increasing humidity will slow the rate of drying, causing additional damage and possible mold growth. We need keep humidity under control.

We use dehumidifiers to remove water vapor from the air. Again, if you think of the air as a sponge, the dehumidifier basically wrings the water out of the sponge so it can hold more water.
The most common dehumidifier is the refrigerant dehumidifier. It works by condensation. Humid air enters the dehumidifier and flows across cold copper coils. This causes water to condense out of the air. The condensed water drips into a container and is pumped into a drain or outside. The now dry air flows over another set of coils that are hot. This heats the air, resulting in hot, dry air exiting the dehumidifier; perfect for promoting rapid evaporation.

Desiccant dehumidifiers work on a different concept; absorption or adsorption. Those little “do not eat” packets you find in new shoes, electronics and other products, contain silica gel, a highly moisture-adsorbent material. When air enters a desiccant dehumidifier, it is drawn through a rotating panel coated with silica gel, drawing water from the air. The water is then baked out of the desiccant with hot air and exhausted outside.

The dry air that exits the dehumidifiers can now absorb and hold more water evaporated from wet materials. This process continues until all materials reach normal moisture content.
As you can imagine, this process can kick up quite a bit of airborne dust. So we may need to use air filtration devices to clean the air during the restoration process. This helps to protect you from irritants, allergens and pollutants that are present inside every home.

Again, our goal at Clean Pro Cleaning & Restoration is to get your home and routine back to normal as quickly and safely as possible. Please share this information with your friends, neighbors and family. We deeply appreciate your business and referrals.

How to CONTROL AIR POLLUTION in Your Home

Fall allergy season in the United States typically runs from end of Summer through November, and is often caused by high levels of ragweed pollen and mold spores. Ragweed is a wild plant that blooms and releases pollen. It grows in many areas, but especially on the East Coast and in the Midwest, and its pollen can travel hundreds of miles. Mold growth can also increase in the fall due to summer warmth and humidity, and damp leaves provide an ideal environment for mold to grow.

What you can do to control indoor air pollution – We use the word “POLLUTION” to describe harmful or poisonous substances introduced into an environment. Water pollution, ground pollution, noise pollution, and air pollution are examples that we most commonly relate to the outdoor environment. So it may surprise you to find that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published reports that indoor air is 2-5 and even up to 100 times more polluted than outside.

Humidity Plays an Important Role in Indoor Air Quality – The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air- conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends maintaining indoor relative humidity levels between 30% and 50% for human health and comfort. Higher humidity can create an environment where microbes can flourish and create an unsanitary condition. In addition, higher humidity can result in condensation of water on surfaces. This can hold soils and organic matter, creating a perfect incubator for mold, which can exacerbate asthma and allergies.

Air Suspends Particles – Most airborne particles are harmless. However, others can cause problems, particularly for those with asthma, allergies or immune disorders. There are four
keys to keeping your indoor air clean and healthy: exclude, capture, clean and control.

Exclude – Keep contaminants out – Keeping contaminants out of the home is challenging because most airborne particles are tiny and can be everywhere. Pollen, carbon, mold spores, organic matter, insect matter, car exhaust, and plain old dirt enter the home, transported on air currents, clothing and shoes. There are other contaminants that originate from within the home. Pet and human dander, food particles, dust mites and their feces, cooking gases, sprays, chemicals, cleaning agents and many other particulates combine to reduce overall indoor air quality. Limiting entry can be done by keeping doors and windows shut, removing shoes when entering and immediately changing your clothing after dusty activities like yard work.

Capture – filter and contain everything that enters – When airborne particles enter your home, they remain suspended for a period of time. Those that are larger or denser drop out of the air and settle onto surfaces. Smaller, lighter particles remain suspended longer -some nearly indefinitely- and are best removed by air filtration devices and the filter on your home’s HVAC system.

Pay attention to the filters you use. Use high quality pleated filters. Don’t buy based on price alone. Get filters that are rated MERV 7 or 8. Higher MERV ratings may place excessive
restriction on your ventilation system, requiring a change in configuration. Talk to an HVAC professional for more information on your particular system.

Clean – remove pollutants from surfaces – Eventually, particles settle on surfaces such as floors, furniture, counters, window sills, shelves and walls. Vacuuming and dusting remove most of the particles, but make sure that your vacuum cleaner has good filtration also.

Hard surfaces can be cleaned with electrostatic dusters or dust cloths that attract and hold particles, or by wiping hard surfaces with a damp cloth and wet mopping floors. Other surfaces such as carpet, area rugs and upholstery will require periodic professional cleaning to remove accumulated soils and pollutants.

Control – maintain equipment, humidity levels and filters – Proper maintenance is important. Ensure your vacuum cleaner, AC unit, range hood and other ventilation equipment are working properly. Clean or replace furnace filters at recommended intervals; usually monthly depending on the type of filter and environmental conditions.

Clean Pro Cleaning & Restoration can help improve your indoor air quality with regularly scheduled professional carpet and upholstery cleaning. Call us today to set up your clean
and healthy maintenance program.

Over the last decade, the upholstery cleaning industry has evolved considerably. With advances in fabrics and fibers, cleaning methods must adapt to ensure safe and effective care. Upholstered furniture today often features a combination of fibers, making proper identification of the material crucial before beginning any cleaning process. At Clean Pro Carpet and Restoration, we specialize in cleaning furniture upholstery while preserving the fabric’s integrity, ensuring your cherished pieces are protected from damage.

Understanding Fabric Types for Proper Care

Most upholstery fabrics fall into two main categories: natural fibers and synthetic fibers. Natural fibers are further divided into two subgroups—protein-based and cellulosic-based fibers. Protein-based fibers include materials such as wool and silk, while cotton and linen fall under cellulosic fibers. These natural materials often require specialized cleaning methods, such as foam or dry cleaning.

On the other hand, synthetic fibers, which are commonly used in modern furniture, can typically be cleaned using hot water extraction, also known as steam cleaning. However, the key to ensuring the longevity of your furniture lies in proper fabric identification before cleaning.

Expertise Matters in Upholstery Cleaning

Many upholstery manufacturers include cleaning tags under cushions, identifying the cleaning method best suited for the fabric. Inexperienced cleaners might shy away from upholstery cleaning, fearing potential damage or fabric deterioration. At Clean Pro Carpet and Restoration, our skilled technicians possess the expertise to handle delicate fabrics with care. With our team’s extensive knowledge of fibers and cleaning techniques, you can trust that your upholstery is in good hands.

Protect Your Upholstery with MicroSeal Fabric Protection

For added protection, Clean Pro offers MicroSeal, a non-toxic, non-allergenic fabric protection formula that provides permanent protection against stains and sun fading. MicroSeal offers peace of mind, ensuring that your furniture stays looking fresh and vibrant for years to come.

If you’re looking to extend the life of your furniture and keep it looking its best, trust Clean Pro Carpet and Restoration for professional upholstery cleaning and fabric protection.

MOLD… the SILENT DANGER

Mold damage might not be an obvious threat at first glance, but its impact on health and property can be far-reaching. As homeowners, we often focus on protecting our houses from visible perils like fire and water damage, but it’s crucial not to overlook the silent danger that mold can pose.

THE IMPACT OF MOLD DAMAGE ON HEALTH
Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in damp and humid environments, making our homes susceptible to its growth. While mold plays a vital role in nature by breaking down organic matter, it can become a serious concern when it infiltrates indoor spaces and begins to grow, especially when left unaddressed. The health risks associated with mold exposure can vary depending on the type of mold, the extent of contamination, and individual susceptibility.

Respiratory Issues: One of mold exposure’s most common health effects is respiratory problems. Mold releases tiny spores into the air, and when inhaled, they can trigger various respiratory issues, especially in individuals with allergies or asthma. Symptoms may include coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, nasal congestion, and exacerbation of existing respiratory conditions.

Allergic Reactions: Mold spores are common indoor allergens, leading to allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. Allergy symptoms may range from mild to severe, including sneezing, skin rashes, watery or itchy eyes, and respiratory distress. Prolonged exposure to mold can worsen these symptoms and even cause the development of new allergies.

Immunological Responses: In some cases, mold exposure can also lead to immunological responses, impacting the body’s ability to fight off infections. Individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those undergoing medical treatments or with underlying health conditions, are particularly at risk.

Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions: Mold exposure can exacerbate pre-existing health conditions, such as chronic respiratory illnesses, allergies, or skin conditions. This can lead to a decline in overall health and quality of life.

Toxic Mold: Certain types of mold, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (often commonly referred to as “black mold”), can produce toxic byproducts called mycotoxins. Prolonged and repeated exposure to certain mold toxins can lead to more adverse health problems in certain individuals.
Common Sources of Damage Caused by Mold
Mold can flourish in environments with moisture and organic materials, and it’s crucial to identify the common sources of mold growth to prevent its harmful effects on health and property. These sources include water leaks and intrusions, flooding, high humidity levels, poor ventilation, damp basements and crawl spaces, condensation on cold surfaces, wet or water-damaged materials, and a lack of maintenance.

Recognizing Mold in Your Home
Recognizing mold damage in your home is vital for taking prompt action and mitigating potential health risks. Look out for visible mold growth, musty odors, water stains, peeling or bulging paint, allergic or respiratory symptoms, high humidity, and deteriorating materials. If you suspect mold, seek professional inspections to identify hidden growth accurately. Swift and effective mold remediation is crucial to prevent further damage and safeguard the health of your household.

The Process of Mold Remediation
Property restoration for mold is a complex and specialized process aimed at safely and effectively removing mold from indoor environments. It requires a systematic approach to prevent the spread of mold spores and ensure the complete removal of mold colonies.

By entrusting the mold remediation process to experienced professionals like Clean Pro Cleaning & Restoration, homeowners can be confident in the thoroughness and efficacy of the remediation. Seeking professional help ensures that mold issues are tackled promptly and comprehensively, protecting both the property and the well-being of its occupants.

The Evolution of Water Damage Restoration: Why Expertise Matters

Water damage restoration has come a long way since its early days when the primary focus was simply extracting water and allowing natural drying processes to occur. Today, the science behind effective water damage restoration is far more advanced, driven by the need to safeguard public health, minimize structural damage, and save time and money.

One of the key developments in this field is the emergence of psychrometry—the science of drying. Understanding the complex interactions between temperature, humidity, and air movement is crucial to efficiently drying water-damaged structures. This specialized knowledge is not just about restoring a building’s appearance; it’s essential for preventing secondary damage and ensuring a healthy indoor environment.

Water intrusion, regardless of the source, can significantly impact the ecology within a building. Damp conditions can lead to biological growth, particularly mold, which poses serious health risks. Microbial amplification—where microorganisms multiply rapidly in wet, warm conditions—can occur if water damage isn’t addressed promptly. This is why a timely response is critical not just for the building’s integrity but also for the occupants’ health.

Given the complexity of water damage restoration, it’s essential to rely on educated and certified professionals. At Clean Pro Carpet and Restoration, our technicians are not only certified but also trained in multiple scientific disciplines, including microbiology, biocide chemistry, and psychrometry. They are skilled in inspection techniques, thermodynamics, building science, and the theories of evaporation and dehumidification.

Wrinkles, Ripples & Buckles OH MY!!

Why does this happen? Can it be fixed?
Carpet ripples and buckles can happen to old carpet, new carpet, in high traffic areas and in low traffic areas. These ripples not only look terrible, but can cause dangerous tripping hazards. Since this unsightly phenomenon can happen any time during the life of your carpet, even when it is new, prevention is the best medicine.

Ripples Happen
Ripples can occur throughout the life of a carpet. Ripples are small waves that usually appear sometime after the carpet is installed. They can happen in a localized area or throughout the entire room. Installer error is the most common cause. Though ripples can also develop from excessive rolling traffic, improper carpet cushion, delamination of the primary and secondary backings and even some manufacturing defects.

To avoid ripples carpet should be installed using a power stretcher. Too often installers save time by using a knee-kicker. This results in inadequate stretch and the potential for ripples to develop as the carpet relaxes. Ripples also occur to carpet that is not properly acclimated to the environment prior to installation, especially if the carpet is installed in cold weather. A carpet needs to acclimate to normal room temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before installation.

Wrinkles are Born
Wrinkles are usually seen in new carpet immediately after installation. Carpet wrinkles are areas where the carpet has been folded or crushed during storage. Wrinkles not only affect the surface yarns, they go all the way through the carpet backings and may be permanent. It is best if this condition is identified before the carpet is installed. If possible the wrinkled portion of the carpet roll should not be used. Wrinkles may be improved by steaming and grooming the carpet, but the results will vary based on the type of carpet yarn, backing, and the severity of the wrinkles.

Cleaning and Repair of Wrinkled and Rippled Carpet
Occasionally, carpet will develop ripples immediately after cleaning. This can be quite disturbing to both the homeowner and the cleaner. The cause is moisture absorption into the adhesive layer between the primary and secondary backings of the carpet. Even though the ripples appear after cleaning, the root cause is improper stretch of the carpet during installation. Usually once the carpet dries completely and acclimates to the normal temperature and humidity of the home the carpet will lie flat again. This can take up to 48 hours, though in rare cases the ripples may persist.

The only way to fix rippled carpet is to re-stretch the carpet. Re-stretching requires training, skill and patience. It is more difficult to re-stretch a carpet than it is to stretch it right the first time. If ripples are ignored for too long, the carpet will develop buckles. Buckles are large ripples that form breaks and/or wrinkles through the face yarns and carpet backing. If buckles are not corrected permanent damage to the texture and structure of the carpet results. Even if the carpet is re-stretched the damage from buckles may still be apparent.

So what should you do if your carpet develops ripples? If the carpet is still under warranty, it’s best to contact the installer and the retailer where you purchased the carpet. If you don’t get any help there the manufacturer would be the next logical step. You may have to be persistent and patient to get results, so keep track of names, dates, and times of all calls or e-mails. If your carpet is out of warranty and has ripples or buckles steaming and grooming the pile yarns may help minimize the appearance of the damage.
